Tesla's sales across multiple European markets continue to decline, according to recent reports. The latest statistics reveal that in August, Tesla's registrations fell by 47.3% year-on-year in France, 84% in Sweden, 42% in Denmark, and 50% in the Netherlands, with the company's market share shrinking consistently across these regions.

The company did see modest improvements in Norway and Spain. In Norway, registrations increased by 21.3% year-on-year, while Spain experienced a significant 161% increase to 1,435 units, largely attributed to government subsidy programs.

BYD Outperforms Tesla in Key Markets

Despite these improvements in Norway and Spain, Tesla's sales figures were overshadowed by BYD's remarkable growth. In Norway, BYD's sales surged 218% year-on-year in August, while in Spain, they increased by over 400% to 1,827 units. From January through August, BYD sold a total of 14,181 new vehicles, substantially exceeding Tesla's 9,303 units during the same period.

Challenges Facing Tesla

Market analysts point to several challenges confronting Tesla. The most pressing issue is its aging product lineup. Since launching the Model Y in 2020, Tesla has not introduced any new mass-produced models for five years. The recently unveiled Model Y L made its debut in the Chinese market first. Although there have been sightings of Tesla testing new vehicles in Europe, official launches and deliveries are still some time away.

While Tesla's product range has remained static, competitors—including Chinese automakers and traditional European manufacturers—have continuously introduced new models. This has contributed to Tesla's market share in Western Europe dropping to 1.7% in the first half of 2025, down from 2.5% in 2024.

Furthermore, some of Elon Musk's public statements have alienated potential customers. A survey by Electrifying.com found that over half of respondents indicated Musk's comments made them reluctant to purchase a Tesla, damaging the brand's reputation.

Used Car Market Pressures

The performance of the used car market has also become a significant factor hindering Tesla's sales growth. Following substantial price reductions for new vehicles since 2023, the resale value of Tesla cars has been adversely affected. Data from UK's Marketcheck indicates that in July 2025, used Tesla transactions increased by 270% year-on-year, but the average price of a used Model Y fell by 41% compared to the same period last year. This suggests that while transaction volume is growing, Tesla is effectively competing against its own models in the used car market.
