BYD has marked another milestone in its international expansion with the rollout of the first vehicle from its new passenger car plant in Camaçari, Bahia, Brazil. Overseas markets have become a key growth driver for the Chinese automaker, with analysts predicting intensified global investments and export acceleration this year, positioning BYD for rapid expansion across multiple countries.

BYD Posts Stellar First-Half Performance, Dominates BEV Sales

First-half results show BYD sold approximately 2.146 million new energy vehicles, up 33.04% year-over-year, maintaining its market leadership position. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for half of total sales at over 1.02 million units, surging 41% annually. Meanwhile, Tesla's global deliveries fell 13.3% year-over-year to 720,800 units during the same period.

Notably, BYD's BEV sales first overtook Tesla in Q4 2024 with approximately 600,000 units (up 13.1%), compared to Tesla's 495,000 (up 5%). The Chinese automaker continued its lead in Q1-Q2 2025 with approximately 416,000 and 606,000 BEV sales respectively.

Overseas Sales Surge Becomes Key Growth Catalyst

Behind this sustained growth lies BYD's strategic global expansion. The company's overseas sales skyrocketed 130% year-over-year to exceed 470,000 units in the first half of 2025 — surpassing its entire international sales figure for 2023.

A BYD executive attributed the growth to three factors: "First, our technological edge from sustained R&D investment, with Blade Battery, DM-i Super Hybrid, and megawatt-level flash charging addressing industry pain points. Second, our diversified product portfolio covering all price segments meets varied consumer needs. Third, our globalization strategy — through localized production, policy alignment, and robust sales networks — has earned international trust. Our new energy vehicles now operate in 112 countries and regions."

As its globalization strategy accelerates, BYD continues gaining traction in key European markets including Italy and Spain, as well as Turkey, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and beyond, with steadily improving international brand recognition.
